"Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, 'I have put my words in your mouth'." (Jeremiah 1:9)
Professional athletes hire agents to represent them—the agent swings deals, takes phone calls, and looks out for the interest of the athlete.
Typically Christians think of God representing us, looking out for our interests. And he does.
But we also represent God. We are his agents. We speak on his behalf.
Moms speak to their kiddos on behalf of God.
Friends speak to friends on behalf of God.
A caring member of your small group speaks to you on behalf of God.
You speak to your sister on behalf of God.
Pastors speak to you on behalf of God.
We represent God and look out for his interests, too, just like the prophet Jeremiah.
God trusts you with his words. Speak well. Speak often. You will make a difference.
PRAYER: What a responsibility, God, that I represent you when I speak. What a privilege! Put your words in my mouth, and help me make a difference. Amen.
FURTHER MEDITATION: Read Jeremiah 1:1-10. Set aside at least 15 minutes to meditate on this questions
- There's a lot going on in vv. 1-3. Jeremiah's birth family, home town, tribe, time and citizenship. But something even more important happened to Jeremiah before all of that. What is it, according to vv. 4-5?
- "I appointed you" (v. 5) literally says in the Hebrew, "I gave you." Like Jeremiah, you are God's gift to people whom God wants to hear his words. How does that encourage you when you think that your efforts are futile? Why might that inspire you to improve?
- How does God answer when you give the excuse that you can't speak for him? Read v. 8. What are some circumstances where you should be speaking for God but you've backed away? From what can God rescue you?
