Won in Christ

(I am attending the WELS national convention this week and this devotion is based on the message delivered at the opening worship service).

One in Christ.
This is the theme of the national convention of our church body this year.
I have the privilege of attending.

We are "One in Christ" - because we have been "WON in Christ".
1 Corinthians 15:50-58

We are the champions...
- everyone loves a champion
- we rally around them
- even the fair-weather fans get excited

When is a champion a champion?
You're not a champion while you are still playing...
Not until you've won.

Is Jesus Christ a champion?
Did he live his life like a champion?
- No - except for Palm Sunday - it looked like he was anything but the "champion" that the Jewish people were looking for.

When we look at Jesus on the cross - he does not LOOK like a champion.
But he was.
And he is.

Indeed - the angry mob surrounding the cross was kind of saying...
- "The end is near - finally we have got him..."

But think of Jesus on that cross.
If you think about his words while he was being tortured physically and spiritually - he is also kind of saying...
- "The end is near - finally I have got them...saved!"

Our Jesus is a different kind of champion.
We are "One in Christ" - because we have been "WON in Christ".
His victory is "ONE and DONE".
IT is finished.

No rematches.
No "let's see what happens next season".
IT is finished.

The tomb where Jesus was laid was not his "final resting place".
When the stone was rolled away - we knew for sure that it was death's "final resting place" instead.
Death is swallowed up in victory.
Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?
IT is finished.

He is risen.
He is risen, indeed.

And the best part is...
You have a front row seat in the victory parade.
When your life is over - you step into the light and hear "Well done, good and faithful servant!".
You have been WON in Christ.

Be happy - you are One in Christ.
Be joyful - you are One in Christ.
Be ecstatic - you are One in Christ.

Brother and sister - AMEN!

Time for an extreme makeover...inside...

(Wanted to share Pastor Patterson's daily prayer this morning...it sure speaks to me!
Pastor Don is one of our pastors at holyword.net)
Daily Prayer Friday July 17, 2015
From: Donald Patterson
Daily Prayer Friday July 17, 2015

6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.- Colossians 4:6

Dear Jesus, I know I am not alone in this, but I have noticed how easy it is for me to make sure that my words are laced with grace and peace outside of my home, but behind closed doors "Mr. Hyde" says freely what's on his mind unfiltered.  Not always, but too often to tolerate.  But, I want my words to be full of grace everywhere, even in my head where only you hear them.  So, I need an extreme makeover inside.  I need you to fill me with your incomprehensible love and peace so that it's there waiting to bubble out to my closest family and friends.  I want my words to be full of grace  even when they are unfiltered.  And when I blow it, give me the faith and courage to admit it to anyone and everyone who needs to hear me say "I was wrong."  Help all my family and friends to long for this same redemption and restoration too.  AMEN

Fly little birdie!

Today I am sharing the WELS Daily Devotion from July 7th, 2015

I loved the illustration and lesson that the birds have to teach us in "Fly"
http://www.wels.net/spiritual-help/daily-devotion/2015-07/devotion-july-7-2015

Lord,
I know you want me to fly.
But I'm scared.
It's different.
It forces me to get out of my comfort zone.
And I've got more excuses.
Kick me out of the nest (and my comfort zone).
Thanks for the wings!
Amen.

Live from WELS Tech - Just where are those intersections again?

WELSTech 2015 #welstechconf

Saturday, July 11th 2015

Keynote Speaker
Martin Spriggs
Just where are those intersections again?

10,000 hours principle (Malcolm Gladwell)
To master a craft - you need to practice a task or discipline for 10,000 hours.
  • So - if you took a 10 minute shower every day - starting when you were born - you’d achieve master at age 164
  • WELSTech podcasts - 400 podcasts - 1 hour long = not going to get to master anytime soon

But collectively - we can get to 10,000 hours pretty quickly.
This conference has brought the idea and experience holders together with those who are looking for ideas and willing to gain experience.

Martin’s pet project for a few years has been the WELS Mobile app - intersection of technology and ministry.  WELS links and resources in your pocket.  Look for it in your app store.

Recommended book:
What’s Best Next - by Matthew ???
The importance of creating a routine in your life.

In this case - the importance of making the time for a personal intersection of tech and ministry.
Achieving a routine of daily time in the Word.

Jonathan was in a camp with about 600 men.
The Philistines were basically just around the corner.
Jonathan sneaks out - takes his armor-bearer with him.
Didn’t tell dad (King Saul) what he was doing and just snuck out.

Then he did something amazing.
He said - where is the intersection - between God and this war with the Philistines?
He told his armor-bearer that God was going to let them know what to do next.
He didn’t have it all planned out.
Was he scared?

We are surrounded by our own Philistines.
Everything about our physical world.
And it scares us.
When have you been most afraid?
When in your life have you been absolute - i have no control here - afraid?

Why did Jonathan leave the camp?
He thought that absolutely something needed to be done!
And it wasn’t happening.

#1 Jonathan was a RISK TAKER.
You, at this conference, are a Jonathan.
Willing to find out how we can use technology and ministry to battle our Philistines.
We have crawled out of our holes.

#2 Jonathan DIDN’T GO ALONE.
He took his armor bearer.
The armor bearer said - I am with you HEART AND SOUL.
100% committed.

Have you found your armor bearers at this conference (or in your life)?
Other’s who are kindred spirits?
Who share your heart and soul for sharing the Gospel?
Your passion. Your drive. Your vision.

We pray that you have.
People who are willing to share the experience and expertise from their Philistine battles.
Not always success but experience.

Technology idolatry - it blinds us.
We are here at this conference because we are.
Are you more excited about a trip to the Apple Store or Best Buy than Sunday Worship?
Are you more excited about that package of tech from Amazon?
Or the announcements at E3?

Are you blind, too?

TASK: Count the number of people in white shirts passing the ball to another person in the white shirts.
Are you done?
If so - read on.

You didn’t see something that’s really obvious because you were focusing on your task.
What you thought - what you were told - was important.

The voices we hear every day draw our focus
They tell us what is important.
And we see and follow it blindly.
But are we focused on the right things?

The apostle Paul was...
You’ll remember, friends, that when I first came to you to let you in on God’s master stroke, I didn’t try to impress you with polished speeches and the latest philosophy. I deliberately kept it plain and simple: first Jesus and who he is; then Jesus and what he did—Jesus crucified.

#3 Have A Ridiculous Focus on Ministry
Jonathan snuck out with one goal.
He had a ridiculous focus on
defeating the Philistines (if God willed it).
Lead on God - and I will follow!

#4 Trust God...Not Yourself
Jonathan had a light-bulb moment - when the Philistine responded with the “Come on up here.” command.
Jonathan’s response -  “The Lord has given them into the hand of Israel”

Live from WELS Tech - The Internet and your Brain...

I was at WELS Tech (a technical conference for our church body) this past weekend and wanted to share some of the thoughts and insights they shared.

WELSTech 2015 #welstechconf

The Internet and your Brain
David Tess (father, teacher and always very curious [Curious George reference])

Books he has read that changed his life
“The Shallows: What the Internet is doing for our brains”
“The DIsconnect”
“The Read-aloud handbook”

Dave sez...
“I might sound like an
  • alarmist
  • luddite
  • expert
I am none of those.”

This presentation is not about bad stuff online, privacy, terrible choices.
Those are all real and present dangers.
The devil is busy, busy, busy.
But that’s not what this presentation is about.

What it is about - the internet (and related tech) is changing us.
We have to be really careful about the media we use - because it changes us.
Our relationships.
Our brains.

Information overload
“What information consumes is rather obvious: It consumes the attention of it’s recipients.  Hence a wealth of information creates a poverty of attention.” Herbert A. Simon (in 1969)
And we are creating more information (a Library of Congress worth of text) every day.
Wealth of information = poverty of attention (because who has time to pay attention to it)

Multi-tasking = Mediocre-tasking
We aren’t really good at multi-tasking.
Multi-task mode from Google
Out attempts to multi-task give us hummingbird brains.
(buzz over here, sip, buzz over here, sip, buzz over here, sip...)

You are what you…
think.

Neuroplasticity
old vs. “new” thinking - the brain does keep growing and changing your whole life
brain trauma can be recovered from
Violinists vs. non-violinists - their brains behave differently (trained that way - not born that way)
Professor Harold Hill - the “think” system - it does actually work...
  • Experiment with non-piano players
    • 1 group was asked to practice a simple 5 notes scale
    • 1 group was asked to imagine /think they were practicing it - but not actually touch the keys
  • Their brain activity while practicing was identical
A new take on...
Philppians 4:8 - Whatever is...THINK about such things.
The emphasis is on THINK.

Try it in your own life - how can you focus on the "Whatever is..." items?
Maybe listen to a different radio station.

Different Brains
My brain doesn’t care about the quality (of my notifications, interruptions) of what it’s doing.
It just likes to keep doing it.
It get's trained to like to keep doing it.
You feed it, you need it. And need it. And need it.

We've been Affecting our Brains for years

  • Mr. Rogers
  • Power Rangers
Think about the speed of camera shot changes between the two shows.
Did that affect your brain?

Wonder!
"When we are so far away from where things come from
...we are robbing ourselves of the wonder of understanding all of that.”
We need to encourage wonder again.
Mr. Rogers created wonder moments
  • I wonder what's happening in the land of make believe
  • I wonder what Mr. Speedy Delivery will bring next
  • I wonder how peanut butter is made
Outsourcing of memory
We’ve outsourced our memory to the "brain" in our pocket.
We don't "have to" remember anymore.
“not being forgotten isn’t the same as being remembered.”

Deut 11:18 - Fix these words of mine on your minds and on your heart…

Tools and Tech
We need to be careful about the tools and tech we use.
We form ourselves to the tools.
If all you have is a hammer - everything looks like a nail.

There will be naysayers…
Socrates was one of the first naysayers of the written word.
“People will cease to be wise - they will be filled with the conceit of wisdom - at the written word.”
And ironically - Plato - his follower - wrote down all Socrates' sayings and they live on for us today...

It has come to this.
March 6-7, 2015 - National day of unplugging
Really - it has come to this?
We need a day to tell us to unplug

We think need to be connected - because we think EVERYTHING is an emergency.
Years ago - the only people with pagers were...doctors.
Because they actually HAVE EMERGENCIES.
We just think we have emergencies.

We don’t need to reject or disparage technology.
But we do need to put it in it’s place.
Technology is amazing.
When taken and used properly.

Agree or Disagree
“I think in the olden days families mattered more.  It feels like we’re losing the idea that family matters.”
When presented this at a youth rally last year - the overwhelming majority of teens agreed with the statement.
Surprised?

Divided Attention
We are case studies in divided attention.
Multi-tasking (true multi-tasking) is something that humans are bad at.
We don't switch focus well.
We like to linger, and go back, and basically defeat the purpose of trying to multi-task.

Undivided Attention
We are much better off when we focus and just finish.

Letters = Undivided Attention
It means that people take the time and give up the time to write
“I miss those days even though I wasn’t alive.” (A 14 year old boy)

Trust Affected
We are reliant on others for answers - not as willing to find it out for ourselves.
Before the GPS in your hand - a trip to a new place was an adventure.
Sometimes a panic-filled adventure.
Are we trusting the tech in lieu of each other?

Are you tired/overwhelmed?
Do you have FOMO? (fear of missing out)
Or FOBM? (fear of being missed)
Is being disconnected the same as "not being"?

Add as Friend vs. Add as Acquaintance
A Friend Request is REALLY just an Acquaintance Request.
Accepting doesn't make someone your friend.

We substitute connection for conversation.
Facebook is a “perpetual class reunion”.
Do you really need that kind of self-scrutiny?
Aren't you beyond that? Aren't you different now?

John 15:15 - real friends

Are we losing the ability to “just be” with others?
Family is important.
Multi-generational family is important
Conversation is important.

Our “selves”
Are we ever alone enough by ourselves - to know who we are.
Do our kids know who they are?
Daydreams are a lost art.

Calm.
Unplug.
Get away.
...Later that night - Jesus was there alone...

Is it really important for kids (and grown-ups) to slow down?
“mindfulness” - teaching kids and adults to slow down
Study shows there are two traits that do not develop if you don’t slow down
  • Empathy
  • Compassion

So now what?
How about games (real honest to goodness, sit down and play) games
Games = more fun that you’d think
  • Pictionary
  • Mad Gab
  • Card games

All of these things take time
That’s good - take the time.
Make the time.
It’s worth it.

He read “It’s a Book” to us.
